Eye of the beholder

Recent @williampcorgan’s IG on “eye of the beholder” with Kate was very interesting. I highly recommend to watch this one too!

They talks about how you define the truth. He claims that one good thing under this quarantine life is that people are becoming more aware of there is a level of manipulation in our society.

I made 2 connections. 1: the truth should be only one but the people’s interpretation of the truth is vary and transitional. 2: the truth is often bent depends on particular agenda, and distorted by the higher power to protect their own vested interest.

Their talk reminded me of the book called “What is Justice?” by Kunihiko Takeda who is a scientist I respect a lot. He talks about the notion of the truth or “correctness” changes over the period of time by the development of science and technology. For example he talks about “witch hunt.” Back in the medieval time in Europe people were truly believed the existence of witch and it was the “correct” thing to execute such person. But in our modern time if you do such a thing you will be arrested. As you can see what we believe as truth may not be true in hundreds years later. So in a sense, you should always try to look at things with a critical mind. We should not be afraid of keep questioning what is widely approved as the norm or the truth. You might find something important behind the mountain of information.

彼の話を聞きながら、２つの事を考えます。

1：真実というのはたった一つでも、人々の理解における真実にはばらつきがある事、そして人々が考える真実は変化するものであるという事。２：真実は時に権力のあるものが彼らの利権を守る為、ある物事を達成する為にうまく操作されるという事。

彼らが話していた事はいま読んでいる本で私が尊敬する科学者の武田邦彦先生著書による『正しさとは何か？』ともリンクします。先生は人々が考える『正しさ』とは時代や化学、テクノロジーの進歩によって、変化すると言及します。例えば、中世のヨーロッパにおける『魔女狩り』はその例で、その頃の人々は魔女がいる事を信じ、処刑する事をよしと考えていました。でもその頃の正しさを今追求すると、言うまでもなく逮捕されるわけです。この様に、今私たちが「正しい」と認識している事は何百年後の世界では正しくない可能性があるわけです。そうであれば、私達はいつも正しいとか真実だと思われている事象に対して鵜呑みにするのではなく、質問を投げかけ続けることに恐れてはいけないと思うわけです。山の様な情報の向こうに大切な事を見つけ出すことができるかもしれません。
